At this year’s AIMS Summer Splash event, educators from throughout Illinois gathered to learn, network and grow to make this year of middle school teaching the best one yet! Focused on hot topics that matter most to modern middle school educators, Summer Splash saw teachers discovering new ways to inspire their students to learn at the highest level.
In a presentation focused on Mastery Learning, Rae Hughart shared strategies to increase student achievement and ownership through self-paced mastery grids.As they learned from middle school teacher John Olzen, educators discovered how teachers can meet the needs of all their students in a full-inclusion classroom by developing personalized pathways to learning using the Google Platform. Educators discovered how Google Read & Write and Google Classroom can bolster responsive teaching.
Monica Genta showed teachers how to be awesome for all 180 days of the school year by encouraging them to focus on small, but inspiring, moments in their classrooms.
Makerspace classrooms have the power to motivate learners! Using high and low-tech equipment to facilitate student learning in science, technology, engineering, art and math, veteran teacher Jennifer Smith shared student-tested STEAM activities and demonstrated how hands-on learning can increase student achievement.
Bilingual teacher Tracy Fuentes shared her strategies for success for ELL students and introduced teachers to the second language acquisition process to help them better understand the language and academic needs of English Language Learners.
Renowned researcher, writer and teacher Steve Mertens of Illinois State University gave teachers critical insight into Middle Level Education Research (MLER) SIG agenda and its components and showed educators how to put research findings into practice.
At #AIMSNetwork Summer Splash 2018, educators connected to teachers from outside their district, attended engaging presentations, and were equipped with new strategies to make an impact in their classrooms this fall.
